I try really hard to eat as locally as possible. This accomplishes many things at the same time. By striving for a "locavore" lifestyle, we can reduce carbon emissions that are sent into the atmosphere from freighted food products; we can help support small farmers by purchasing their products directly from them; we also encourage a richer and more resilient community life by interacting with our neighbors, as well as dine on quality food that in turn helps us all to stay healthy and strong.
In Spring, I like to eat all the asparagus, strawberries, maple syrup and green garden peas (among many others) as I possibly can. Summer brings wonderful goodies like sweet corn and tomatoes, berries and stone fruits, followed by pumpkins and apples in the Autumn.
At work, we are even able to buy our grains for our breads and baked goods from locally sourced mills. Brinkley Farms supplies us with incredibly rich and flavorful whole wheat flour, and Lindley Mills produces wonderful Rye and cornmeal that we turn into Pumpernickle and farmlicious corn muffins.
I just finished reading Robin Mather's book, The Feast Nearby. It's a lovely read, with lots of recipes and thoughtful insights. It's available on Amazon.com, and perhaps in your local library. Enjoy!
